Neuro Optimizer by Jarrow – My Review

neuro optimizerNeuro Optimizer is a nootropic supplement produced in the USA by Jarrow Formulas. It comes in capsule form and is designed to improve mental clarity and brain power.

According to Jarrow, the capsules nourish the brain and “enhance brain metabolism” while also supplying antioxidants that will protect mental function.

Such claims are pretty common for nootropic supplements, but Jarrow is a well-established company that has gained the trust of many consumers, so any claims they make carry a little more weight than those made for some competing products.

Neuro Optimizer in Summary

Neuro Optimizer has some big doses of some useful ingredients. The cholinergic presence is strong, and there is a good taurine level, which despite its stigma, is not the type of stimulant that causes a jittery nervousness. Quite the opposite actually.

I’d like to see more of the natural memory enhancers and nerve growth stimulators that we are used to seeing in modern nootropic supplements. For that reason, it doesn’t make my shortlist. However, I wouldn’t write it off. Some people report great results. Others are unimpressed. Hit or miss.

Ingredients in Neuro Optimizer

Each (4 capsule) serving provides:

brain outlineAcetyl-L-Carnitine (500mg): A versatile non-essential amino acid that is used in a variety of different supplements, including bodybuilding blends and weight loss pills. Acetyl-L-Carnitine is a powerful antioxidant that can protect the brain cells from oxygen damage and lessen the likelihood of degenerative neurological conditions.

It also appears to be capable of enhancing cognition by boosting the functionality of acetylcholine (neurotransmitter).

L-Glutamine (500mg): An amino acid that is necessary for the smooth synthesis of the neurotransmitters GABA and glutamate.

GABA has a calming effect on the neurons that can prevent over stimulation of the brain, protect against stress, improve mental focus, and aid relaxations and sleep.

Glutamate is important for memory formation and recall. It can also assist reasoning and creativity.

Taurine (500mg): Yet another amino acid. The fact that taurine is often added to energy drinks could be seen as signifying it is a stimulant. This is far from being the truth.

Taurine actually has a calming effect on the brain that makes it useful for reducing anxiety levels and aiding relaxation. It can also improve the overall health of the cells, increase nerve signalling and (according to some studies) may have value as an antioxidant.

Cognizin (300mg): A choline supplier. Choline is synthesized in the brain to create acetylcholine—a neurotransmitter that is important for healthy cognitive function.

Choline is also useful for boosting mental focus, improving the memory, and ensuring healthy cerebral metabolism.

Phosphatidylcholine (120mg): A further source of choline, phosphatidylcholine can be useful for building and repairing brain cell membranes.

Phosphatidylserine (100mg): A chemical that can be manufactured within the body, but is generally obtained from food. Phosphatidylserine is vital for the cell signalling process and is often used in supplements that are designed to improve memory and cognition.

It is often used for treating depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and age-related mental decline.

Alpha Lipoic Acid (50mg): A fatty acid that can be found in every cell of the human body. It is an antioxidant and, as such, it can offer protection against free radicals. It is also essential for maintaining cellular energy; so it is often used to provide extra mental energy.

Customer Feedback

A few sample customer reviews read:

“I haven’t noticed any benefits at all, but on a more positive note I have not experienced any side effects either.”

“Neuro Optimizer helps improve my energy and focus and really helped a lot when I was studying for my exams.”

“This product works great for anxiety, and I’ve also noticed my memory has become sharper. If you ever suffer with brain fog and need something to blow it away, these little beauties are just the ticket.”

“It’s been 3 weeks now, the pills haven’t done a damn thing for me, and I’m guessing they never will. Very disappointing experience.”

Side Effects & Health Issues

People who are under the age of 18 and individuals who have existing health issues, or are taking medication, are advised to seek the approval of their GP before commencing supplementation.

The same advice is extended to pregnant or nursing mothers and women who are trying to conceive.

Purchasing Options & Considerations

In the USA Jarrow products can be found on the shelves of many stores, and there are also numerous online buying options available, but customers based in the UK have a more limited choice.

At the time of this review the only three options available appeared to be MyNaturalMarket.com, Lucky Vitamin, and All Star Health. All three suppliers had applied a price tag of around £23 for 120 capsules, and the difference in price was only a matter of pennies.

Recommendations for Best Results

noocubeNeuro Optimizer is heavy on the acetylcholine boosters and not so strong on other potentially good ingredients. One can only fit so much into the pills though and they have put very good dosages into theirs.

The only reason it doesn’t make it into my highest ranked is due to the lack of an adaptogen like rhodiola or herbal memory enhancers like bacopa, lion’s mane…that sort of thing.
